Disk Cleanup is devoted to removing unnecessary files from your system. It’s a straightforward utility that can quickly delete the relevant data with a few clicks; the trick is knowing it exists in the first place. Here’s how to use this alternative to Storage Sense and the Settings app writ large.

  • Search for ‘Disk Cleanup’ from the Start menu. This is the quickest way to launch Disk Cleanup; all you have to do is select the app from the search results.
  • Choose what kinds of files you’d like to delete. Disk Cleanup can be used to remove a variety of file types from the system, ranging from Downloaded Program Files to the Recycle Bin, so all you have to do is check the box next to the category you’d like to delete and then click the “OK” button at the bottom of the app’s window.
  • Confirm you want to delete those files. A dialog box will appear to make sure you truly want to delete the files belonging to the categories you selected. Clicking “Delete Files” will give Disk Cleanup the go-ahead, at which point it will open a new window showing its progress that automatically closes itself when it’s done removing the selected files. Clicking “Cancel” dismisses the confirmation dialog but leaves Disk Cleanup itself open.

Use the Built-in Clean Manager

1. Press the “Windows + R” keyboard shortcut to open the Run window. Here type “cleanmgr”

2. You will now see a pop-up window asking you to select a drive. Select “C” drive and click “OK”. The Disk Clean-up utility will start scanning your PC for temporary files eating up disk space after upgrading to Windows 11.

3. Next, click on “Clean up system files” on the next window that appears. You may get the same pop-up as the above step again. Select the “C” drive and hit Enter.

4. Here, scroll down and look for “Previous Windows Installation” and “Windows Update Clean-up” options. Make sure they are selected and click on “OK”. You can also enable the checkbox for other options if you don’t want those files.

5. Finally, all the files you no longer need will be removed from your Windows 11 PC, and you will get some much-needed free disk space. Do note that performing this action also means you can’t go back to Windows 10 easily. You will have to install Windows 10 from a USB drive manually.

Turn on Storage Sense

  1. Go to Start Settings System Storage
  2. Under Storage Sense can automatically free up drive space for you by getting rid of items that you don’t need, like temporary files and content in your recycle bin, turn on Storage Sense.

Choose your Storage Sense settings

To tell Storage Sense how often to run and what to clean up, follow these instructions.

Note: Any settings you choose will apply only for you. Other users on your device can manage their own settings.

  • Go to Start Settings System Storage
  • Select Configure Storage Sense or run it now
  • Choose your desired settings, including when to run Storage Sense, how often files are cleaned up, and more

Choose when to run Storage Sense

  • Make sure Storage Sense is turned on
  • Under Run Storage Sense, select how frequently you want Storage Sense to run when you’re online and signed in.

Choose your preferences for deleting temporary files

Under Temporary files, choose when files from your Recycle Bin or Downloads folder are deleted.

  • Items in the Recycle Bin will be deleted based on how long they have been in the Recycle Bin.
  • Items in your Downloads folder will be deleted based on how long they have been unopened. The default is to never delete these files unless you specify.

Delete personal files or move them to an external storage device from Windows 11

Personal files such as videos, music, photos, and documents can take up a lot of space on your device. To see which files are using the most space:

  1. Select File Explorer  from the taskbar and find the files you want to move.
  2. Under This PC in the menu on the left, select a folder to see what files are saved in it. The Videos, Music, Pictures, and Downloads folders usually contain the largest files that you’ve saved to your device.
  3. To see the size of the files in a folder, select View > Details. Right-click in the open space and then select Sort by > Size to show the largest files at the top of the list.
  4. If there are files you no longer need on your device, you can either delete them or move them to an external storage device like a USB drive or an SD card.

To move photos, music, videos, or other files that you want to keep but don’t use very often, consider saving them to an external storage device like a USB drive or an SD card. You’ll still be able to use them when the drive is connected, but they won’t take up space on your PC.

  • Connect an external storage device like a USB drive or SD card to your PC.
  • Select File Explorer  from the taskbar and go to the folder that contains the files you want to move.
  • Select the files, then select Cut on the ribbon. Navigate to the location of the external storage device you connected, then select Paste.
