What is the Monument Valley PC app?
In Monument Valley for PC, player-character princess Ida journeys through mazes of optical illusions and impossible objects, which are referred to as “sacred geometry” in-game, as she journeys to be forgiven for something. The game is presented in isometric view, and the player interacts with the environment to find hidden passages as Ida progresses to the map’s exit.
Each of the ten levels has a different central mechanic. Interactions include moving platforms and pillars and creating bridges. The player is indirectly cued through the game by design elements like color and directly cued by crow people, who block Ida’s path. Critics compared the game’s visual style to a vibrant M. C. Escher drawing and Echochrome. The game includes a camera mode where the player can roam the level to compose screenshots.
How to Play
As with most puzzle games, players try to get from Point A to Point B by tapping the screen. What makes this unique, though, is the game’s landscapes. Players can drag and turn parts of certain buildings to create a path from one area to the next. And, in others, stepping on trigger squares will change gravity and have you walking along the side of a wall. The game’s physics is based on perception, so if you’re able to position elements so there appears to be a path, you can use it, even if that path wouldn’t exist in the real world.
MONUMENT VALLEY 2 for Windows app is unlike any game you’ve played. It’s a winding, brain-warping title that will occasionally frustrate you to no end, only to have you slapping yourself on the head when you figure out whatever puzzle you’re stuck on. By routinely ignoring gravity and the laws of the physical world, it creates a dream world that is positively surreal. It’s a very soothing title — one that’s best suited for players who need a slower pace.
The game doesn’t offer much in the way of help, though, which could frustrate young players. Even basic actions are left up to the player to discover. Although it’s nice to have a game not talk down to players, this is one that could have been done with a little handholding in the early levels to ease people into the different styles of play.
The game is $4.99 on the U.S. App Store and is optimized for both iPhones and iPads. The plot of the game revolves around game protagonist Ro introducing her daughter to the architectural puzzle world she occupies. The game doesn’t require you to have played the previous installment, however; ustwo says you can jump right into the new version without missing anything critical.
If you’ve never played any Monument Valley for PC before, you’re in for a treat; these games are stunning both visually and in terms of sound design. You should definitely go ahead and plug in your headphones to enjoy it, though – it’s immersive and really helps with the overall experience.
