What is the Obsidian PC app?

Obsidian for PC app is described as “A second brain, for you, forever”. Obsidian for Windows wants to be your second brain. It accomplishes this goal by adopting the philosophy of “link as the first-class citizen.” Individual, unconnected notes are useless, so Obsidian focuses on connections and links between notes, mimicking the billions of neural connections in your brain.

How does it Work?

Your notes are saved locally on your machine in plain text markdown format, allowing you to easily transfer your notes to other apps or open them with Notepad, in essence, there is no vendor lock-in. You are in complete control of your notes and files and can use Google Drive, GitHub, Dropbox, etc. to sync your notes between different machines.

The platform wants to help you gain insights from your notes and connect those insights. Once you have connected your notes with links and backlinks, you can visualize connections between notes with the graph view. The graph view feature is handy for identifying loner or outlier notes.

When using the Obsidian for PC app, don’t just create notes. Take the time to link your notes together and experiment with tags. Choose a few use cases to get started with, such as collecting code snippets, documenting your software, and keeping track of your ideas and inspiration. The more you use the app, the more useful it becomes.

Features

  • Portability:  CommonMark and GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) are supported for portability, they include syntax highlighting, markdown table and more. For additional expressiveness, the app supports also tags, footnotes, internal links and more.
  • Backlinks and graph view: to easily navigate your notes. The app works like a real brain so connections between notes are highly encouraged and easily done by simply typing to get the link auto-completed.
  • Note Multiplexer: panes can be split and resized as you need, allowing you to easily cross-reference multiple notes. Most suitable for big screens and short notes, panes can also be pinned or combined, according to your needs.
  • Plugins: to create your personal note-taking toolkit. Plugins include page preview, daily note, tag pane, slides, random note, audio recorder, and so much more.
  • Themes: It allows custom CSS to help you customize the look of the app based on your preferences. You can find a list of available Community Themes here.
  • Offline – can access whether connected or not. Notes are stored offline and are yours
  • Random Note – opens a random note which is useful for discovering old content
  • Daily Note – create today’s note at the click of a button
  • Starred Notes – can star “favourite” notes for easy access
  • To-do list – easily create to-do lists
  • Outline – see the structure of your note and easily navigate to other sections by clicking
  • Search – easily find what you are looking for

A useful feature of the app is Obsidian Publish where you can take your notes and convert them into an online digital garden/blog. The simplicity of doing this through “no-code” means that there is no prior technical knowledge required.
