Josh Wardle’s word game, Wordle, may have just moved to The New York Times, but even before the move, the game caused a massive internet explosion. Wordle is everywhere, flooding all of our social media posts, but that’s something to take solace in. The app provides a healthy distraction from all of our daily anxiety. A reprieve where the rules make sense and hard work can pay off.
What is the Wordle PC app?
Wordle for PC app is a daily word game you can find online here. It’s fun, simple and, like a crossword, can only be played once a day. Every 24 hours there’s a new word of the day, and it’s up to you to figure out what it is. The site itself does a fantastic job of explaining the rules:
The app gives players six chances to guess a randomly selected five-letter word. As shown above, if you have the right letter in the right spot, it shows up green. A correct letter in the wrong spot shows up yellow. A letter that isn’t in the word in any spot shows up gray.
You can enter a total of six words, meaning you can enter five-burner words from which you can learn hints about the letters and their placements. Then you get one chance to put those hints to use. Or you can try for performance and guess the word of the day in three, two or even one go.
How do you play Wordle for PC?
The aim of Wordle for Windows app is to guess a 5 letter word in 6 or tries or fewer. If you’ve seen the ITV gameshow Lingo, it’s essentially the same concept without the time constraints (or the cash prize).
If you guess a letter correctly and it’s in the right spot in the word, it’ll light up green. If you guess a letter but it’s in a different spot in the word, it’ll go yellow. If you guess a letter and it has no place in the word, it’ll turn grey.
All of these colours will also show up on the keyboard, so you can easily keep tabs on which letters you have and haven’t tried as you make your next guess.
- Green tiles mean the letter you guessed is in the word and in the correct spot.
- Yellow tiles confirm the letter is in the word but in a different square.
- And Gray tiles mean the letter doesn’t belong anywhere in the word.
Tips to play
Take your time, think it through, and guess the word before you run out of guesses. The correctly guessed green letter will stay in its place, giving you a Jeopardy-like experience. It sounds easy, but don’t get too confident just yet. And if you start playing and need a little help, here are the best Wordle starting words for the best chance at success.
Once you correctly identify the word, you’ll get a pop up with your statistics, including how many guesses it took you, what percentage of games you’ve won and, most importantly, your Wordle streak.
Occasionally, Wordle for Windows app will throw out an especially tricky answer. The differences with spelling in the US, for example, can cause problems, or if the word isn’t commonly used. But much of the fun of Wordle comes from figuring out what the answer might be from the clues revealed by each subsequent guess.
